Not only is the packaging amazing, of course, but the whole vocabulary of old-timey advertising is so charming. For instance, doesn't "indelible" sound so much more delightful than "permanent"? I'd use indelible ink over permanent marker any day.

Or the use of the word "outfit" to denote "a set of tools or equipment especially for the practice of a trade," rather than, you know, a dressy getup. A stencil outfit is so much cooler than a stencil kit, am I right or am I right?

Okay, back to the packaging: Carter's Black and White Indelible Stencil Outfit comes in a metal case, which you screw off to reveal two tiny ink pots and their respective brushes, stuck upright in two pieces of cork.
Maybe I'm just a giant weirdo (ha, you think?), but I'm a little swoony over that whole arrangement. Everything is so thoughtfully arranged, and everything fits together perfectly.

Cue 1) standard grumbling over crappy modern packaging and generic design, 2) imagined nostalgia for ye olde days long before my birth, and 3) affirmation of junking as a noble pursuit.

nice nice nice. is this your own little collection?

Love these. I love the Carter's kit the most - what a great find. Wish I still had all the rub-off lettering my Dad used to give me from his drafting job. That, the huge silver metal stapler, and his crazy array of drafting pens are things I miss most about "going to the office."
ReplyDeleteCompletely awesome. If I ever had to go back to being a secretary, I might be able to bear it a lot better with these. What a great thing to collect!
ReplyDeleteThose are so cool, and very distinctive :)
ReplyDeleteI also think those old airmailer envelopes/letter-writing paper are pretty nifty too.
